Sleep where
the sky is bigger.
RuralRentals is a curated collection of cabins, farmhouses, converted barns and lakeside retreats. No hotels. No crowds. Just woodsmoke, starlight and porch coffee.
Not a booking site. A love letter to rural life.
Founded in 2012 in a one-room schoolhouse in the Catskills, RuralRentals started with three family farms and a paper guestbook. Today we partner with 480+ independent hosts — farmers, foresters, artists and third-generation innkeepers — who open their land to slow travelers.
We visit every property. We sleep in the beds, test the showers, walk the trails. If it doesn't make us exhale, it doesn't make the collection. No mass listings, no algorithm farms. Just real places with real stories.
- 🌲 Personally inspected. 72-point check: water, heating, safety, silence, stars.
- 🤝 Hosts keep 100%. You book direct. No 15% platform tax, no fake cleaning fees.
- 🐾 Slow travel ethos. Local food maps, farm chores, dark-sky guides in every home.

— Sarah & Tom, BrooklynStayed in Vermont A-Frame
"Booked direct, saved $180 in fees. Kids still talk about feeding lambs. Best Wi-Fi in the woods, but we barely used it."

Good questions
How is RuralRentals different from big platforms?
No service fees, no fake cleaning charges. You message the host directly, we only curate and guarantee. Hosts keep 100% of the rate, so prices are 12-18% lower on average.
Are pets allowed?
Yes — 336 of our 480 homes are pet-friendly, many with fenced meadows. Filter by "pets" and tell your host breed/size. Usually $25 cleaning per stay, no hidden per-night pet tax.
What if I need to cancel?
Free cancellation up to 7 days before check-in. Within 7 days we offer 50% credit for rebooking. Weather emergencies (snowstorms, floods) are always fully refunded.
Is there Wi-Fi and heating in winter?
All winter-approved homes have tested heating to -20°C, hot water and backup power. 92% have Starlink or fiber 50+ Mbps. Off-grid domes clearly list "digital detox — limited signal".
Can I work remotely from a farm?
Absolutely. Look for "Work-ready" badge: desk, ergonomic chair, monitor, quiet room. Many hosts offer weekly discounts -30% for 28+ nights.
